Q: As an ambitious new lawyer, how can I get bigger cases to work on at my firm?
A: The best way to build trust in the firm and get bigger, better assignments is to pay your dues by doing a great job on the work you do get. Then, express your enthusiasm for more and more opportunity, attend relevant CLE programs to gain more and more knowledge, and develop mentor and supervisory relationships within the firm so your requests for meatier assignments meet with results, over time.
I’m all for ambition, but do be sure you’re giving your current job a real chance. If you then find you are truly being pigeonholed or the kind of work you want is not available or coming your way, it may be that you’ll want to start thinking about finding a new job.
