Q: Do we as lawyers have to be so serious??
A: Well, of course we deal with serious situations and heavy consequences, daily, and of course we owe it to our clients and employers to be serious about our work. But being buttoned-down serious all day long has heavy consequences too for our own well-being and our work.
Physiological and the related psychological reactions to constantly taking ourselves seriously have negative consequences we need to heed. Lawyer experts who have studied the science of positive emotions, know that humor leads to “PE” which results in greater resilience, productivity, and creativity.
Having a sense of humor in general and about ourselves and our profession doesn’t mean lawyer bashing or belittling anyone. Read more about it…and lighten up when you can.
