How can I figure out what I really want to do in the law?

Q:  How can I figure out what I really want to do in the law?

A:  Start by making a list of the things you know you don’t want to do.  Often that’s an easier way to get started.  Then, focus on what you like to do, what kind or size of working group you prefer, whom you want to serve as clients.

For a quick quiz that will help you jump start the process and provide information on practice areas and options, go to the ABA Legal Career Central website at www.abalcc.org.  I chair the inaugural Board and collaborated on the creation of this quiz. Let me know if it helps.

Once you have one or even a few avenues of interest, start talking to fellow alums in the field(s) and leaders of the local bar association committees; search LinkedIn for other pertinent people to reach out to as you fix on what you want to do and move ahead to ferret out opportunity.
