Q: How do I best deal with office politics in my new job?
A: Find a mentor/ colleague who can fill you in on the office politics and power structure. Listen, but avoid commenting. Forge a relationship with at least one well-positioned person in the office who will champion you and your work with others in power. Get to know your co-workers as people, be a positive team player, and periodically let your supervisor(s) know of the outcomes you create for clients, not just the tasks you handle, without ever seeming self-satisfied or arrogant.
All workplaces, large or small, have politics and power structures. Yours is a good question–don’t shy away but instead learn to access and manage your place of respect from the start.
