I am getting bad feelings about my job security at work, but I’m reluctant to enter the job market when everyone says it’s so bad. Advice?

Q: I am getting bad feelings about my job security at work, but I’m reluctant to enter the job market when everyone says it’s so bad. Advice?

A: I always say that if you need to or think you ought to get into the job market, it doesn’t matter what its state is…what matters is whether you know how to search and search well.

Update your résumé so it presents you well.
Draft a cover letter that moves the ball forward.
Network, now.
Know how to answer traditional and behavioral interview questions.
Make good choices and keep the search momentum going.
Negotiate the market and the terms of an offer…believing you will get one you want.

There are jobs, even in a down market, and people do get them. But while you’re searching wisely and confidentially, keep up your performance at work. It’s your obligation, and it’s smart.
