Q: I am having terrible mood swings in my job search. Some days I am entirely hopeful and other days I think I’ll never find a new job. Is that normal?
A: Entirely. Like many processes, if we could see the end to know that it ends well, we could relax during the search. What you need to do is keep momentum going–by tending to the search as you would any project. With a balance of inspiration and realism, you can create progress toward the positive culmination. It won’t necessarily be a steady pace, but you won’t feel so upset if any one thing fails to materialize, because you’ll have more in the hopper and more outreach to do.
Believe in the search process and feed the beast. Starting and stopping, unless unavoidable, will not help…and will only make you moodier.
