Q: I am seeing ads lately that ask for new types of abilities, such as anticipatory skills, and traits not generally found in lawyer ads, like a sense of humor. Why do you think that is?
A: I think the game of law has gotten so externally competitive, employers want lawyers who will play an aggressive offense, not just a sound defense. At the same time, employers are averse to internal strife, so they want lawyers who take their work seriously yet are congenial team players. With the daily technology-led pace and continual practice pressures, we want productive and collegial workplaces. And we’re learning that strategic anticipation, more than tactical reaction, plus the ability to enjoy our work puts the most points on the board.
