I find it hard to work in a regimented environment, where everyone is expected to do things for clients the exact same way. Is that going to be a problem for me in my legal career?

Q: I find it hard to work in a regimented environment, where everyone is expected to do things for clients the exact same way. Is that going to be a problem for me in my legal career?

A: For some, it’s comforting and even necessary to have that kind of structure. For you, in contrast, it sounds like it would be a problem over a career to try to excise your individuality. Emerson once said “do not go where the path leads; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” That seems like good advice for you. But being different can be a challenge in the wrong workplace. Look for organizations that value a range of styles and approaches to problem solving, and believe that the best client teams are diverse in all ways.
