Q: I have a team of 12 lawyers and we gather weekly. Is there anything I can do to enliven the meetings?
A: Have them each bring a favorite quote or be ready to identify a favorite word and explain why they are favorites. Or have them find a funny law, share something about themselves their co-workers don’t know, recommend a great read and see who else agrees. The particular topic isn’t as important as having a laugh together, learning something about each other, and using creativity and communication skills well. Start your meetings off well; people will look forward to attending and will be more punctual, too.
After you have taken this tack for several weeks, start to have one lawyer be responsible for the introductory activity each week. Go in order of height, letters in their middle name, those with birthdays that month…again, the order isn’t important. Having fun together even quickly, in the press of business, is…as is getting to know each other better and enjoying each other’s company while working hard on behalf of your clients.
