I have updated my resume, written a good cover letter, and know what kind of work I want to do next…but I can’t get myself to start my search. Why do you think that is?

Q: I have updated my resume, written a good cover letter, and know what kind of work I want to do next…but I can’t get myself to start my search. Why do you think that is?
A: Lawyers are often change and risk averse. We tend to feel that setting an application in motion is a commitment, when it’s actually only one step in a process. Even if an offer is made, you need not and should not accept unless you feel it’s the right job for you. That doesn’t mean it has to be the perfect job. Wanting to find the perfect job can freeze the process, for fear that the perfect job will be impossible to find…so why look?
When you plan to retain control over your search, its component phases and conclusion, starting isn’t so momentous. It’s just necessary.
