I know what I want to do with my law degree, but people tell me I need to go a more standard route first. Should I defer my plans in favor of practicing law?

Q: I know what I want to do with my law degree, but people tell me I need to go a more standard route first. Should I defer my plans in favor of practicing law?

A: Said another way: Should you be careful what you wish for? I don’t know your plan and I don’t know who is giving you advice, but unlike them, I say go for it. There are so many things to do with a law degree, and the shortest distance to a quality career is not always a perfectly straight line.

Careers are artful and personal. Why spend time and risk doing something your heart isn’t in, when you could be laying a foundation for the career you really want?

Congratulations on knowing what you want to do. I support your getting to it.
