Q: I was asked to provide my desired salary range for a position in another city. What should I say?
A: Do some online research on sites like Glassdoor or Salary Wizard, and talk to a couple of lawyers in the new locale if you can to get a feel for what the ballpark is like there for compensation for a comparable role. Also go to an online cost of living calculator and compare your current city with the new one. Those items of information will give you a starting point for identifying a range.
Don’t make the range overly broad, because employers may want to go to the bottom of the range, where you’ll want to negotiate for mid-range or higher. You might also want to mention other factors that, if possible to discuss, would be desired in a compensation package, e.g., relocation expenses and bonuses at sign-on or year-end.
