Q: Is it a problem if our two senior male partners and a rising star male associate are the speakers at our firm’s holiday party?
A: It’s problem if you have woman and lawyers of color in the firm. To have an inclusive and thus more productive environment, people need not only be invited to a party, they also need to be asked to dance, as they say. If you don’t model inclusivity in the more subtle “micro” moments, as well as in the more obvious, ongoing ways, your attrition rate will be higher than good business practices dictate and your firm’s culture and reputation will be diminished.
If you don’t have a diverse firm, that’s a different problem.
