Q: Is it worth joining a bar association?
A: The answer is yes, but it really pays off if you’re not just a passive member who only takes online CLE but never participates in a committee or event. A bar association is a place to meet fellow practitioners in order to get your name out, gain referrals, and be a part of a collegial community. There are also time-saving social media opportunities in addition to in-person offerings of which to take advantage.
It’s never too early or too late to become an active bar association member…and leader. Offer to put together and moderate a panel on hot topics in your practice area, write an article for the newsletter or magazine, do a pro bono project…there are plenty of ways to enrich your own career and contribute to the profession through local, state, and national bar associations.
