Q: Once you leave one practice sector for another–say you leave a law firm to go in-house–can you say goodbye to ever going back?
A: Actually, people do go back and forth between roles and sectors. It may even be that you become more valuable to a law firm, to use your example, having been inside a company and seeing how they make decisions and determine fees. And, as an illustration, here is the career path of one lawyer:
“I have gone from small firm, to my own firm, to large corporation, to large firm, to small corporation, and back to large corporation.”
Transferability, mobility, and flexibility are all hallmarks of today’s legal market…and yes, you can go home, er back, again.
