Q: What are some good ways to explore the market from a distance, if I’m thinking of making a geographic move?
A: Of course, you can look for online ads, searching by the new locale. I also suggest you contact your law school to find out about fellow alumni living in the area to which you may move, in order to network with them.
The local bar association staff can tell you who the Chairs are of the committees most relevant to your field and you can reach out to them. Ask for their thoughts about the state of the market and for a couple of names of colleagues you could contact…people they would want to talk with were they in your shoes. Then, contact those they named, letting them know how you learned about them; make the same inquiries, and ask if there might even be opportunity where they work.
In these ways, you can take the pulse of the market in the possible new legal community and, in doing so, jump start a meaningful long distance search.
