What do I do if I don’t have a writing sample to use in my job search?
Q:  What do I do if I don’t have a writing sample to use in my job search?

A:  Have you written something of record you could retrieve from a court file?  Might someone at a prior employer be able to send you a document you wrote but that you didn’t take with you when you left?

Many employers won’t ask for a writing sample, and if they do you have several choices including the one above; you could also say you don’t have a current writing sample but would be happy to do a piece of research for them and write up your findings. Or, you could write a short article on a hot topic in your field, which you could use as a writing sample and also submit it to a pertinent publication.

I’m not suggesting a law review quality article, but a shorter, well-written item focusing on a practical and timely issue.  You could even review a relevant, recent decision and predict its effect on a fact situation that typically arises in your practice area.  That would be a great exercise and would make a nice writing sample too.  I hope one of those options helps.
