Q: What if you’ve been away from the practice for a period of time and are looking to reenter?
A: You may qualify for a new “returnship” program for lawyers called OnRamp. See the project website, which has a looming deadline; even if you’re not a female lawyer who has been out of the profession for at least two years, the site also has resources for returning lawyers.
And, if you want to think beyond the law firm, a site not for women only is called Legal Nomads, where you can read about the career paths of lawyers who decided to do something different.
Also, be sure to network with fellow lawyers who already went through the reentry process. Call your local bar association and your law school alumni office to get names of people with non-linear career paths, and contact them for names of people they know in the area(s) in which you are focused.
To misquote British author George Eliot: It is never too late to be what you might have been.
