When I try to get other lawyers to tell me who might need me or what a good place to work next would be, they have nothing to say and my networking efforts stall.  Why?

Q:  When I try to get other lawyers to tell me who might need me or what a good place to work next would be, they have nothing to say and my networking efforts stall.  Why?

A:  Because you’re making the common mistake of asking people questions they can’t answer.  Instead, just ask them who they know in your practice area…and if need be, help them by suggesting they think of lawyers they would refer a case to, that they have seen speak at a program, or that they would invite to join them on the panel for a CLE session.
I applaud you for trying to network. Tweak your approach and you’ll find that the process works.
