Q: Where can I find out if a particular law firm is hiring?
A: Try looking on the firm website, at postings from your law school if it is local, on electronic or in print ads in the area’s lawyers’ newspaper, or on professional and bar association job boards. Also, in that you have a specific firm in mind, look for commonality on its website or on LinkedIn between yourself and current lawyers at the firm, and contact them to ask about openings and the process for most effectively applying.
The truth is, though, that most law firm openings are filled without rising to the level of a posting or ad. People who show interest at the right place and time, through networking and luck, often get hired. So increase your chances not only by looking for “open market” jobs but at what is called the “hidden market” as well. You’ll find opportunity–and will also find that it’s not really all that hidden. That’s good news, all around.
