Q: Why can’t I jar new ideas out of my associates?
A: Recently, I saw an ad that asked: Would you find yourself truly at home on a team of intelligent, passionate, and creative professionals? Most lawyers would say yes as to intelligence, but not enough define themselves as passionate and creative. Next time you hire an associate, screen the resumes for innovators and ask questions about new ideas they have implemented. For those you already employ, declare an ideas culture, ask for new ways to approach client problems, and be open to the suggestions you get. Receive new thoughts in a brainstorming mode, rather than with a judgmental mindset. If your associates truly know that you do not expect, and in fact don’t want, great minds to think alike, you may find new ideas flowing… yes, in a passionate, creative and intelligent way.
